Figure 11.5 shows the therapist with his fingers slightly anterior over the midline of the neck, which again places him either on top of the scalenes or the sternocleidomastoid. So in essence, you are working both the superficial and deep cervical fascia with this technique. Begin by palpating the trapezius and working that muscle and then the levator scapula. Then if you still want to spend time on the scalenes, go to it. You will find a flow with this technique by working back and forth from scalenes to traps back to scalenes to the sternocleidomastoid and so forth. The client can also assist by turning her head slightly, tucking her chin, or even lifting her head slightly off the table. Another way of having the client assist is by having her distract her arm and shoulder by placing her wrist over the head of her femur and asking her to reach for her toes. Whatever you can do to get her into the manipulation will be helpful.
